aromatherapy

By Gabriel Mojay - Principal of the Institute of Traditional Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy (London, 1992) - Groveland, California http://aromatherapy-studies.com/
The term ‘aromatherapy’, in the first instance, has two discrete connotations: The first definition is casual, prosaic, and confined principally to the positive effects of odor – and from this perspective can be subdivided into subjective commonplace observations of how fragrance enhances mood and subjective well-being, through to the scientific study of those effects, psychologically and neurologically, as reported, for example, by American biologist Dr. Rachel Herz and as described by Austrian researcher Dr. Gerard Buchauer in his seminal work. The intersection between aromatherapy as a simple ‘odor therapy’, and - to identify its second principal connotation - as a modern-day therapeutic discipline in its most systematic and ontologically rich manifestation, is liminal. In other words, there is a conceptual and affective meeting ground between aromatherapy as generalized term for the beneficial effects of fragrance, and as a branch of botanical medicine employing aromatic plants principally in their volatile and distilled aqueous forms. Whether ‘holistic’ and/or ‘clinical’ in context and exact practice, the relationship between ‘aromatherapy’ and as an actual therapy and pure essential oils is inseparable. Certainly aromatherapy is dependent on distilled and expressed plant volatiles for its proper administration. From this perspective, genuine essential oils are central to the definition as well as the domestic use, professional application and remedial dispensation of aromatherapy as an evidence-based therapeutic phenomenon and practice, with its historical roots in 19th century France and the United States — not to mention the literally defining role of René-Maurice Gattefossé, famed for coining the term ‘aromathérapie’ and for nourishing its oeuvre.

CO2 extract

By Geert De Vuyst - Formation en Aromathérapie - Opleidingen aromatherapiegeertdevuyst.frgeertdevuyst.be
Translated by Geert De Vuyst - Formation en Aromathérapie - Opleidingen aromatherapiegeertdevuyst.frgeertdevuyst.be
This is an exampleCall for contributions
A CO2 extract is an extract of parts of a plant, obtained by Supercritical Fluid Extraction (EFS) with CO2 (carbon dioxide). "Supercritical" refers to the supercritical phase of CO2, a state at which CO2 combines the properties of the gas state with those of the liquid state. This phase occurs above the "supercritical point" which is a combination of temperature and pressure. In aromatherapy, CO2 extraction is used for both essential oils and vegetable carrier oils. Compared to an essential oil obtained by steam distillation, CO2 extraction makes it possible to extract volatile and non-volatile components from the parts of the plant. For example: gingerols in the CO2-to extract of Ginger (Zingiber officinale), rhizome; piperine in black pepper CO2-to (Piper nigrum), fruit (berry). A CO2-se extract (selected) contains mainly volatile components; a CO2-to (total) extract contains volatile and non-volatile components.

essence (French)

By Geert De Vuyst - Formation en Aromathérapie - Opleidingen aromatherapiegeertdevuyst.frgeertdevuyst.be
The French word essence has a double meaning. Essence denotes the volatile components of a plant, which, in addition to bitter substances, flavonoids and alkaloids, make up the biochemical composition of a plant. The English word is essential oil. Essence also refers to the cold-pressed extract of a plant part, such as the essence of the peel of a Citrus fruit. In that context, the French abbreviation Ess. is commonly used. According to the ISO standard ISO 9235:2021, such an extract is referred to as a cold-pressed essential oil. The name "cold-pressed extract" is common in English. Some authors and manufacturers refer to cold-pressed extracts as essential oils: in that case the extraction method should be stated separately.

mitochondrion

By Amandine Cancé - Formatrice en plantes sauvages comestiblessavoirsauvagetouraine.cominstagram.com/SavoirSauvageTouraine
Eukaryotic cells, characterized by a nucleus, have organelles such as mitochondria. Present in multicellular organisms such as animals, plants and fungi, these cells are the sites of numerous metabolic activities. The study of plant mitochondria started around 1950, devoting the first 35 years to establishing their fundamental properties and their crucial role in cellular energy production. Often called "powerhouses", mitochondria play an essential role in powering various cellular processes such as molecular synthesis and cell division. Cellular respiration, a complex process taking place in the mitochondria, converts glucose into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main source of energy. About 30 molecules of ATP can be produced for each molecule of glucose oxidized. Plant mitochondria have their own DNA which gives them metabolic flexibility, involving them in various cellular processes such as photosynthesis, stress resistance and thermal regulation. Plants can adjust their rate of respiration. Adjusting cellular respiration in response to environmental changes contributes to the ability of plants to adapt to their environment. Advances in molecular biology since 1985 have shed light on their essential role in plant physiology.
