CO2 extract

A CO2 extract is an extract of parts of a plant, obtained by Supercritical Fluid Extraction (EFS) with CO2 (carbon dioxide). "Supercritical" refers to the supercritical phase of CO2, a state at which CO2 combines the properties of the gas state with those of the liquid state. This phase occurs above the "supercritical point" which is a combination of temperature and pressure.
In aromatherapy, CO2 extraction is used for both essential oils and vegetable carrier oils. Compared to an essential oil obtained by steam distillation, CO2 extraction makes it possible to extract volatile and non-volatile components from the parts of the plant. For example: gingerols in the CO2-to extract of Ginger (Zingiber officinale), rhizome; piperine in black pepper CO2-to (Piper nigrum), fruit (berry).
A CO2-se extract (selected) contains mainly volatile components; a CO2-to (total) extract contains volatile and non-volatile components.
